The True Meaning Of Smekday
by Adam Rex

View in Library Catalog

I have been familiar with this book since elementary school because one of my best friends absolutely loved it and read it at least once a year. When the DreamWorks movie *insert italics* Home came out in 2015, I was surprised to learn that it was based off of this book! I finally picked the book up this summer after seeing the film again, and it did not disappoint!! The book takes place a few years in the future and is written in the form of an essay chronicling the alien invasion of the "Boov" race. There are also several illustrations, which I enjoyed tremendously: not many young adult novels feature drawings. The plot of the book is pretty different from Home, so seeing the movie first didn't spoil the events of the novel. I also enjoyed the witty narrations by Tip, the protagonist of the book!!! I'd recommend this book for anyone looking for a book that is full of adventure, warmth, and a sprinkle of sarcasm ;). Interesting observation: in the novel, the alien Tip befriends is named J.Lo. His name is changed to "Oh" in the movie Home, but Jennifer Lopez voices a character in the film....far out, huh? And also, the book TOTALLY predicted Frozen nearly six years before it came out....you'll understand if you read it ;)

Caught
by Margaret Peterson Haddix

This is the fifth book in the Missing series by Margaret Peterson Haddix. This is a somewhat complicated series: it deals with time travel and the missing children of history! Each novel concerns a different child, and the fifth book concerns the secret daughter of Albert and Minerva Einstein. I really enjoy these books because they combine two of my favorite genres: historical fiction and science fiction. Find Book

Informative but cut off at the prime of Twain's life. Enjoyed all eight hours it took me to read this, but would have liked to see more concerning his later literary works. Unfortunately, pretty sure the author is now dead as it was written in 1985....

by Yun Kouga

In the second installment (or third, depending on the way you look at it) in the Loveless series, Ritsuka meets the Zeroes, fighter-sacrifice pairs who have been genetically engineered to have a significant advantage in battle: they sense no pain. However, this also deprives them of the unique name fighter-sacrifice pairs share, leaving them all with the name, "Zero." Ritsuka discovers a code that leads to a rendez-vous point in a video game, where he learns more about the group known as "Septimal Moon," the group responsible for murdering his brother. He doesn't get much information out of them, but he does discover that Septimal Moon is currently six members while the name implies seven, meaning that one of the members has gone—likely Seimei himself.

Ella Enchanted
by Gail Carson Levine

View in Library Catalog

I have a confession......I hadn't read this book in ages, and so I was sort of confused when it was quite different from the Anne Hathaway movie :P. I enjoyed rediscovering the real story!! Imagine if Cinderella had been "gifted" with obedience at birth, and thus was forced to do whatever her evil stepfamily demanded of her. Imagine if she met her prince years before the ball. Imagine if she was full of dry wit and humor! This is the world of Ella Enchanted: I'd recommend this book! Find Book

Keeper of the Lost Cities Lodestar
by Shannon Messenger

View in Library Catalog

*Spoiler Alert* In the fifth book of the Keeper of the Lost Cities series, Shannon Messenger doesn't fail to deliver on another of her infamous cliffhangers. But before that, Sophie, Fitz, Biana, and Dex work together to take down the Neverseen with a little help from their new spy, Keefe. Having joined the Neverseen in the end of the last book, Keefe has plans to steal two caches from Fintan and learn more about the Neverseen's msyterious "Lodestar Initiative." Twins Linh and Tam Song join the Black Swan, and the council decides to move Exilium's campus to Foxfire so that the prodigies there can learn skills. This stirs controversy, as skills have long been seen as "common" and not worth the time of the nobility. Things get heated when Wylie, Prentice's son, is kidnapped from the Sliver Tower by the Neverseen, leaving everyone reeling. The tower is supposedly impossible to break into, and what's worse, they torture and question him about the death of his mother—leading him to believe that her death may not have been an accident after all. Full of Shannon Messenger's usual twists and turns, Lodestar is a definite page-turner, with a cliffhanger that will leave you screaming for the next book. My heart is certainly still pounding. November can't come soon enough.
